Yesterday I was driving trying to get onto I40 (about a 5 min drive from my house). Thirty minutes later I wasnt even halfway there. When I finally got there, 40 was closed down and as I was going across the bridge to get to 540 this is what I saw- roughly an hour after it had happened.
one westbound pickup truck collided with another pickup truck, which then collided with a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer crossed the median and traveled into eastbound traffic, then caught fire and exploded.
A Dodge Neon with a woman and her child inside collided with the tractor-trailer, as did a Nissan Altima. A third pickup truck, this one traveling eastbound, was pinned underneath the tractor-trailer.
Nemeth F. Sanders, 43, of Bailey, the driver of the third pickup truck, was killed, authorities said. Sanders was a forest fire equipment operator with the Division of Forest Services in Wilson County.
The woman and child in the Neon suffered serious injuries and were taken to Duke University Medical Center, while the tractor-trailer driver, who suffered severe burns, was taken to the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
